Battle of the Roc Bands

Posted on 27 Sep 2009 at 11:29pm

In the playful spirit of music I introduce to everyone the Roc Bands. These are the bands that the former founder of Roc-a-Fella Records are fans of and have been seen at either one of their concerts (Jay-Z) or collaborating with the rock group on an upcoming project (Dame Dash). The bands are Grizzly Bear with Jay-Z in their corner and The Black Keys with Dame Dash as their trainer. These two bands play different types of Rock music, but still are relatively “under the radar,” so to speak, when it comes to a mainstream fan base.

Dame Dash: The BlakRoc Project

Posted on 27 Sep 2009 at 11:16pm

Dame Dash is back at it again with a new collaborative album that will mix rock and rap music. This album will feature some of the biggest hip-hop artist over the musical stylings of The Black Keys a rock band from Akron, Ohio. The Black Keys are a staple in the rock industry mainly with fans of Garage Rock. They have released 6 studio albums since 2002 and are said to be in the studio currently recording their next album. On September 14, 2009 the Black Keys released ‘Hoochie Coo’ featuring rap artists Mos Def and Jim Jones. There is no clear answer if this is the lead single from this project but is confirmed to be the song being recorded on the video teaser.  There are 11 tracks featuring different artist from Raekwon, Mos Def, Jim Jones, and Ludacris just to name a few. Dame Dash seems to be ochre stating this event, but there is no clear answer on what label this album will be released on, but the release date is November 27, 2009 a.k.a Black Friday.

Will this be the return of Dame Dash to Hip-Hop or another failed attempt?

Little Dragon: “Swimming”

Posted on 27 Sep 2009 at 11:16pm

Fun Fact: Animation by Yukimi Nagano’s father…

Little Dragon is an Electronic music group from Gothenburg, Sweden. The lead singer, Yukimi Nagano is of Sweden-Japanese decent, her voice reminds me of M.I.A and Santogold. Unlike them, she has a distinctive style that I can’t quite put my finger on, but sure is there. The group uses many synthetic sounds that when put together makes my ears perk up with anticipation for the next weird element. Music like this gives me hope that soon there will be many new refreshing sounds.

What does this make you think about the future of music?

Modest Mouse: King Rat (Heath Ledger Directed)

Posted on 27 Sep 2009 at 11:15pm

This Seattle indie-band has produced another hit, with their latest release of “King Rat”. Heath Ledger directed “King Rat” before his untimely death. That was one (if not the only) short film he has directed. This song is off their recently released EP ‘No One’s First and You’re Next’ earlier this August.

Hot or Not: Mayer Hawthorne- “Just Ain’t Gonna Work Out”

Posted on 27 Sep 2009 at 11:14pm

WOW..his sound reminds me of  music from the 60s and early 70′s that I love so much. Listening to Mayer Hawthorne was a wake up call for me that people are still making good music that is timeless and is relatable to every age group. Hope to see more from this artist in the future. What do you think? Is it HOT or NOT?
