Tyler Perry beaten with an extension cord by his dad? Bathed in ammonia by his grandmother? Molested by a neighbor? Can we say survivor with a capital S?
Tyler Perry’s new project, a film called Precious about a girl in an abusive household has prompted a heartfelt letter that Perry recently posted on his website revealing all the gruesome details about the childhood abuses he, himself endured.
“I always thought I would die before I grew up,” Perry, 40, wrote in his letter, as he went on with the horrendous accounts in his attempt to find healing and closure.
One night, he says his father “came home mad at the world. He was drunk, as he was most of the time. He got the vacuum cleaner extension cord, trapped me in a room and beat me until the skin was coming off my back.”
He says a neighbor woman molested him at age 10 and that his grandmother tried to rid him of his allergies by giving him “a bath in ammonia.”
“She said she was going to kill these germs on me once and for all,” Perry remembers this incident that surely scarred him for life in multiple ways.
Despite all these horrendous accounts, Tyler Perry has been able to forgive and has made these events the catalyst behind the successful screen writer and filmmaker that he is today.
