Beyonce’s upcoming Egypt performance scheduled for November 6th as part of her year- long “I am…” world tour seems to already be causing much controversy in the conservative Middle East country.
Beyonce’s performance is scheduled to take place in Port Ghalib’s Red Sea resort and is going for up to 400 dollars a ticket.
Although many are excited about the scantly dressed, bootylicious, diva performing in Egypt, there are many who are not pleased. Hamdi Hassan of the Muslim Brotherhood, accused the government of trying to corrupt Egyptians in order to distract them: “The government is trying to make people indulge in sin and licentiousness to cover up the other crimes it is committing against them,” he said in parliament, claiming that Beyonce “appears naked in her clips.” Hamdi claims that allowing such a performance in Egypt would be violating Sharia law. Sharia, or Islamic religious law, covers many aspects of daily life, including family, sexuality, hygiene and social issues.
Beyonce’s world tour, which continues until next March, has already offended conservative Islam.
She postponed her October 25 concert in Malaysia after the Pan-Malaysian Islamic Party called for the Kuala Lumpur show to be canceled because it would promote “Western sexy performances.”
Beyonce previously called off a 2007 concert in Malaysia over the country’s dress code. Government rules there require female performers to cover themselves from shoulders to knees, and show no cleavage.
Other female singers like Avril Lavigne and Gwen Stefani have performed in Malaysia despite similar protests. However, both singers showed little skin in their performances.
Perhaps Beyonce should consider leaving her more sensuous alter Ego Sasha Feirce back home when performing the Middle Eastern portion of her tour.
